Red flags in veterinary ophthalmology are symptoms that may indicate disorders that potentially pose a risk of permanent vision loss.
These symptoms are usually severe and appear suddenly.
The most important red flags include:
- Sudden decrease in vision/vision loss
- Severe eye pain (squinting, pawing)
- Intense redness
- Change in the size/shape of the eyeball or degree of its convexity
- Cloudiness or change in eye color
- Bleeding or profuse discharge
- Visible mechanical damage/wound
Some ophthalmological problems, if left untreated, can result in permanent vision loss within a few hours!
If any of the above symptoms occur, immediate veterinary intervention is necessary.
